Films From the Heart “‘The Swimmers’: Heroic and Heartfelt”

This Netflix biopic is based on the lives of Yusra and Sara Mardini, professional swimmers with dreams of competing in the Olympics. The film depicts their terrifying escape through the darkness and hunger of the Mediterranean Sea on their way to Greece, then Germany. The Mardinis flee the Syrian war and refugee crisis in search of survival and the pursuit of their dreams. Director Sally El Hosaini has thoughtfully planned shots that convey the nation’s burdens, like the hundreds of life jackets that were left strewn along the shore once the crooked boats carrying vulnerable refugees won their battle against the waves. Ultimately, it is a touching film on recent and regrettably ongoing atrocities that is a must-see.
