Student Abroad: Wren Joyrich

Profile?

From Detroit, majoring in SoAn, minoring in Japanese. Also majoring in international studies overseas.

Program?

I’m doing the year-long double degree program with Waseda University, which is in Tokyo, specifically in Shinjuku city.

What do you love about your program?

The location is really convenient and the train system is excellent. There are a lot of international students at Waseda and in Tokyo in general.

What’s hard to adjust to?

Liberal arts at Waseda is very different from Earlham. All classes are purely lecture-based and don’t have opportunities for class discussions. Classmates do not usually know each other and don’t have chances to talk during or in between classes.

What do you want to do before you leave?

I’d like to explore the city, meet a lot of interesting people, and experience all Tokyo has to offer!

Quote?

“I made up my mind I was going to find someone who would love me unconditionally three hundred and sixty five days a year, I was still in elementary school at the time – fifth or sixth grade – but I made up my mind once and for all.”

-Midori, Norwegian Wood, Haruki Murakami
